Planters II Fertilizer Agricultural Program
All of us grow up learning that all life starts from a simple, tiny seed. We watch that seed mature, a miracle of life, and we ask ourselves where does that life come from? The answer: life starts in the soil. Our soil is teeming with life. It is rich, healthy and fertile. Unfortunately, we have a habit of working against that life. We have a habit of taking that life, the nutrients, and not returning them to the soil. We have a habit of working against nature and "the plan". That is unacceptable!
The answer comes down to nutrients and soil life. With every crop, we mine essential life giving nutrients from the soil. For example, a corn crop removes 200 lbs of minerals not including NPK from your soil every year. These nutrients are essential to crop development both in quality and quantity. In exchange for these lost nutrients, we find ourselves pouring on more and more chemical fertilizers to make up for the loss. Many times, chemicals are hazardous to the life in the soil, not to mention our own health! Yes our yields may go up, but are we helping ourselves in the long-run? Absolutely not! Lets put a stop to that cycle, and start a program that builds life and nutrients in your soil, your crop and your life. Our program is a simple four letter word L I F E . We promote life in all dimensions .
For over 60 years, U.S. Soil has promoted programs that help build life in the soil. We have seen companies and ideas come and go, but one thing remains the same: farmers and ranchers all have the desire to build a simple, sustainable, yet profitable program. The Planters II Agricultural Program is not a step by step recipe for everyone to follow. It is a series of sensible measures one can take as they rebuild their soil while increasing yields. The program is not for every situtation, and it is best to talk with your local dealer in setting up a program that works for you.
Keep it SIMPLE
Did you know there are over 100 pairwise combinations of nutrient ratios? One nutrient cannot work without the other, and not only that the ratios have to be kept in a certain range. It is very easy to look at a soil test and say, "I need X mineral". It is not easy to keep your ratios in balance, and as such people fall into the problem of trying to prescription a crop into balance. That is not only far more complicated that it needs to be, but over the years we have yet to see a prescription program that wasn't doomed to fail. We believe that thesimple approach is the best approach. One shouldn't have to be a mathematician to farm! The following are steps on keeping it simple:
- Apply your Foundation First (Rebuild)
Use only proven minerals that are plant available, pH tolerant and bioactive. More minerals does not mean better! Think quality over quantity.
- Balance Your Inputs (Reduce)
Most inputs are overused. They almost have to be overused as the crop lacks the minerals to effectively use NPK to its fullest potentional. By refusing to skimp on the minerals, you are able to reduce your NPK costs and inputs to ideal amounts. More importantly, you are able to work with the life in your soil.
- Rotation and Management
Any good program will talk to you about your management practices. If they don't, you know they aren't a good program. While we believe every situtation is different, crop rotation is essential to the building blocks of life in your soil. These, along with other practices, can help you produce an easy to manage yet profitable farm.
For a sustainable program to work, we must first rebuild the foundation that is your soil. Very similar to the story of a man building his house on a rock, you must build your crop on a healthy, living mineral foundation. Now, some companies may tell you that this 'rebuilding phase' should come at a cost without an immediate return. We don't believe that. For a farmer or rancher to rebuild their soil, they must also receive immediate results and benefits. That is why it is important to use a mineral that is pH tolerant, bioactive and plant available.
To rebuild life in your soil, you need a mineral based fertilizer that follows all three of those rules. Planters II Fertilizer is that product. During the first phase, we recommend applying roughly 250lbs / acre to rebuild a mineral buffer in the soil until that buffer is built then cut back to a sustaining rate. What you are looking for is to build a buffer of plant available minerals in the soil. After which point, your dealer will work with you. In many cases, a good program will eventually drop to only a minimal amount of minerals per year.
Minerals increase the efficiency of your crop. As such, if you have a good program, you can easily decrease your NPK requirements. We recommend reducing NPK 1/3 to 1/2 the first year. Not only will this lower your overall costs, but it will eliminate major "life killers" from your current program. A good program that promotes life can eventually eliminate the need for yearly uses of NPK- producing organic certified crops with minimal hassle.
Rotation and Management
For the past 60 years, we have promoted crop rotations. This, along with additional strong management programs such as minimal tilling, can greatly increase crop performance while reducing crop headaches. Naturally, pests gravitate towards crops that aren't rotated, not to mention you are losing passive benefits provided by a solid crop rotation program. Additionally, we support minimal tilling as the top layer of life is only 6 inches deep in your soil. It is important to rotate, and your Dealer can work with you on developing a strong rotation that is both profitable and ecological
Studies & Examples: Iowa Corn Studies
Whether you grow certified organic corn, gmo corn or somewhere in between, Planters II Fertilizer for agriculture can help your crop. In fact, it has been helping corn crops for over 60 years proven in the field.
- Stronger root systems means survability!
- Reduced NPK needs mean higher profit margins
- Greatly increased sugar content
- Increased growth rates
- Increased yield.
We have seen 205 bu / acre using organic seed, only Planters II and zero NPK.
We have seen 250+ using GMO seed with NPK and Planters II.
- More importantly ears are filled to the end with full heavy kernals
Orchards & Other Fruits
All fruits are highly dependent on plant available minerals. While NPK may grow the base of the plant, it is your mineral content that fills the fruit making it both healthy and sweet. In fact, there is a direct relation to minerals and fruit sweetness. As with all fruit, the better quality you have, the higher price you can get for it.
- Expect increased calcium circulation
- Higher anti-oxidants than equal fruit grown without Planters II.
- Award winning flavors. In fact, grapes grown on Planters II Fertilizer are made into wine that supplies the White House and wine that wins awards for sweetness and quality!
- Greater survivability is essential when dealing with random cold fronts or low water years. Produce top quality fruit in even the worst of conditions.
Planters II Fertilizer Application Rate
Simplify: One Step at a Time
Did you know there are over 114 pairwise ratio combinations of essential nutrients for plants? Try balancing out those combinations one nutrient at time! That just does not make sense. Taking a soil sample, then trying to balance the soil by using organic material instead of chemical materials has you back on the same treadmill that you wanted off! The entire concept on organic/sustainable farming is lost. The concept of a live productive soil is replaced with the "prescription" method. Instead, is it better to have a simple program that produces results. Reduce costs, increase yields - learn more about the Planters II Agricultural Program.
Planters II Fertilizer Application Rate
There are two major misconceptions people have been taught about most "soil amendments" and mineral fertilizers. They are: mineral fertilizers need to be micropowderized, and that you have to apply by the ton. These are absolutely not true if you have a plant available mineral! Yes, if you are attempting to apply any old rock you may be powderizing the mineral in hopes microbial life will break it down faster, but you are still talking about at least two years before the minerals are plant available. Yes, you may be applying in tons when you are hoping to shock the pH and plant into production, but you are creating a mineral imbalance, which is nonsense.
We believe in using common sense. A granulated product is easier to apply. A plant available mineral only needs to be applied in small but sustainable amounts. As such, most people are surprised to learn the average agricultural application rate for Planters II Fertilizer is 250 lbs / acre.
Rebuilding / Build Up Program (250 - 450 lbs / acre)
We are constantly removing minerals from the living soil. This makes us both miners and farmers at the same time, but how often do we return these minerals to the soil? The Planters II Agricultural Program focuses on not only sustaining the minerals you remove from the soil, but builds a foundation of life in your soil for future generations all while reducing costs and increasing yields! To replenish removed minerals, we recommend applying roughly 250 lbs / acre to rebuild a mineral buffer in the soil until that buffer is built, then cut back to a sustaining rate. If you work on building up a strong living foundation, many farmers actually continue to cut back to even less, but that should be on as needed basis.
Sustaining - Broadcast Spreading (150-400 lbs / acre)
Depending on your crop, your standard mineral removal rate is usually 200-250 lbs / acre. As such, for a sustaining program (not a rebuilding), we recommend you start with 200 lbs and adjust based on the crop and year. On average, fruits require slightly higher applications, so it is best to start with 250-300 lbs. On average grains such as wheat require small amounts, so it is possible to start with 150-200 lbs. Remember, Planters II Fertilizer Will Not Burn. Additionally, the more applied the more it will help (up to a point). As such, if you can economically apply more, then it is best to do that.
Sustaining - Banding (150-200 lbs / acre)
For some crops (such as soy and corn), it is extremely beneficial to band Planters II Fertilizer into each row while seeding. It is even possible to blend Planters II with your seed if you have the right equipment. This causes Planters II Fertilizer to be focused around each seed resulting in minimal waste. In such cases, less can be used with greater results. As with broadcast spreading, adjust based on your crop type.
What About Home & Garden?
One Cup of Planters II is equal to 13.7oz. (0.85lbs)
Apply one pound for every 100 square feet. Scratch or water in.
- House plants:
Apply one teaspoon for every 2-inches of container diameter.
Apply at the rate of 6oz. per inch of tree diameter around the drip line of the tree, scratch or water in.
- Turf and Lawn:
Apply at 7-8 lbs per 1000 square feet. Scratch or water in.
Replacing Lime, Gypsum or other pH Balancers (200-400 lbs / acre)
If you are following the Planters II Agricultural Program you should not need pH balancers. However, coming from a traditional farming & ranching program, your soil may be out of range of ideal growing conditions. Instead of applying your pH balancer, you may only need to apply Planters II Fertilizer and double your benefits. For example, if you are using the standard application of 4.5 tons of Lime every few years, you only need to use 300 lbs of Planters II during your Lime year. Why does Planters II Fertilizer work in pounds instead of tons? Plant available minerals that are pH Tolerant! What does that mean? It means even if your soil is 8.4 pH, Planters II minerals are still available to your plant! That means you balance the soil without causing mineral tie-up.
Reduce NPK Needs
Planters II Fertilizer does more than just feed your crop essential, critical minerals needed for growth. Those minerals also equate to performance, meaning your crops utilize NPK more effectively. That means it is possible to reduce your NPK requirements by usually 1/3 to 1/2 within the first year! Additionally, if you follow the Planters II Agricultural Program you may even be able to reduce to only the basic minimal requirements. Remember, the average producer has to increase his NPK every year to make up for a loss of minerals. Return those minerals to the crop, and see your benefit both financially and responsibly.
